Three Straight World Championships For Lee
It is looking good on the Malaysian side at the Copenhagen World Championships as 31 years old number one Lee Chong Wei managed to enter the final rounds of the world championships for the third time straight. Women’s top seed, Li Xuerui from China also managed to advance into the title match against Spain’s Carolina Marin.
Lee has already been the runner – up twice at the Worlds and has now moved in touching distance of the title after ousting the young Viktor Axelsen from Denmark in an amazing set of 21-9, 21-7. Nothing more needs to be said about the experienced Malaysian, who despite his age showed finesse and dexterity in the match against Axelsen. He demonstrated a class with a blend of sublime overheads and flawless defense that secured him 12 of the 13 points in the first game and Axelsen’s weak spot was exposed. Lee is also a two time Olympic singles silver medalist and after his win over the 14th seed he is set for a match between the winner of the Chen Long, Chinese 2nd and Tommy Sugiarto, 5th seed from Indonesia.
“I want to give my country something on Merdeka Day (Malaysia’s Independence day from the British rule – 1957). The whole country will be watching me and there are great hopes, responsibilities and pressure on my shoulders. The games have gotten better, I hope I can keep up my form and give my country a big present,” Lee told reporters.
“Lee has put up a good fight, he has shown what he is capable of doing and is not to be taken lightly, however the stress he is under is great. He needs to concentrate on his practice now and get a lot of rest. We are hoping something astounding from this man,” officials told newspapers.
