The softball team of Gordon Lee rode some high pitching as well as advanced to the Class A state playoffs quarterfinals with a couple of easy victories over Charlton County earlier on Wednesday, beating the visitors 8 - 0 and 19 - 0.
Emily Armour had a couple of pitching victories on the mound for Lady Trojans. Emily struck out 7 in 3 innings in the 1st game. After that, he followed that with 9 in 4 innings victory in the 2nd. Megan Wolinsky relieved Emily in both games and included 8 more strikeouts, as Lady Indians were fixed to 2 hits in the 2 games combined.
Cain and Laumann have been honored by baseball coaches for their incredible baseball tips. No area players were selected second team, while those selected honorable mention were: Boone County junior pitcher/second baseman Doug Teegarden, Newport Central Catholic junior shortstop Brady Hightchew, Campbell County junior pitcher/right fielder Jake Rebholz, Bishop Brossart junior outfielder Zach Fardo and Grant County senior pitcher Aaron Goe.
Mark Biggs of Warren East was selected Mr. Baseball and Central Hardin's Todd Thompson was selected Coach of the Year.
Grand Valley baseball lost in the latest match 7-6 to the Sonoma State. In the second inning Sunday, Cory Phillips hit a double that drove in two runs to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Sonoma State, located in California, rallied with a four-run fifth, and the teams later traded leads before the Seawolves won in the bottom of the 11th with a single to right.
This is a great drill for a warm up for practice. Use it both to teach and to practice.
We do three cycles:
1. Run through the base as if beating out an infield hit. Stress running through the base to the “X”. Also, have a coach with a ball down the RF line. If the runner sees the ball continue on to 2B. If the runner doesn’t see the ball return to 1B. (Pick up an overthrow)
2. Run to 1B, take a turn and pick up the ball in the outfield. (Coach holds the ball)
3. Running to 1B, coach points to 2B and runner runs hard to 2B.
Stand as you would to begin your windmill motion, but position your self with your throwing shoulder against the wall. Start your windmill motion and as your hands go forward and up pivot your body into an open position so your body faces the wall. Both of your hands should be above your head and in contact with the wall.
